and new york. that's mitt romney's debate, not mine. i'll go take it to the democrats and we'll work it out. but even the tax policy center that claims this would be a 5 trillion dollar tax cut for rich has now said -- has now admitted well, we weren't calculating all the deductions he was taking. we were guessing which deductions woe eliminate. this is an opinion about what the result -- he would eliminate. this is an opinion about what the result will be. republicans have a different opinion about what the result will be. >> i want to open the phone lines. or send us a tweet at c-span wj and we'll put your e-mail address if that is your preferred way of communication. ann cultler stay with us until 8:35. the new jobs' numbers are out we want the chance to look at those and get her reaction to the political import of those. we should spend a few minutes on your book before we get to cal calls. what are you -- what's your thesis with this book? what are you trying to do with it? >> um, the white guilt has never gotten anything good for america. it's always been a disaster and driven

some significant differences. host: we heard a bit in the debate last week about where mitt romney stands on his tax plan. here is a headline coming to us. in the fog of numbers, there is little tax clarity from obama and romney. $5 trillion, whether or not tax cuts will equal $5 trillion. there is a difference in this number. guest: the $5 trillion is the gross cost of reducing rates 20% across the board. the. gov. romney made is it is unfair to call it a tax cut because he intends to offset the cost through base broadening. i think one thing that was interesting is although gov. romney has proposed 20%, he did not actually mentioned that number in the debate. i think what he did emphasize instead is he was not going to add to the deficit or increase taxes on the middle class. analyses has been done that shows it is a little bit difficult to keep those while cutting the rate by 20%. the decision not to mention the 20% number suggests that is where he will likely adjust his plan. he will stick with this plan of not raising taxes on the middle- class or adding to the deficit. host:

portman, the one that plays president obama in the debate camp practice sessions. mitt romney is getting ready for the next session, next debate, hoping his mum carries over next week. >> john harwood is cnbc's chief washington correspondent. thanks for being here. i don't know if it's possible to strip politics away from these new unemployment numbers, but if you can, explain, does the president get credit for these numbers coming down, and how real are they? >> well, the president gets credit or blame for whatever the economic conditions are on his watch. these are numbers that are better than they've been, but they're still not good numbers. 7.8% is a high unemployment rate. we've got an economy that's not growing very fast. but it's certainly good news for the president to be able to say that 7.8%, the rate when i took office, we're back down there again. but i think people make too much political impact of these jobs numbers, because they don't need a government statistic to tell them how they feel about it. >> but then you have somebody influential like jack welch who tweets someth
